A penile implant, or penile prosthesis, is a treatment option for men with erectile dysfunction. The surgery involves the placement of inflatable or flexible rods into the penis. The inflatable rods contain a device filled with saline solution and a pump hidden in the scrotum. When the pump presses, the saline solution travels to the device, inflating it and giving the person an erection. The device can be deflated later.
You may be a good candidate for penile implant surgery if you have:
Your doctor will perform a detailed physical examination and evaluate your medical history. This will help them determine if a penile implant is right for you. The physical exam includes a complete urologic exam. It also includes examining the genitals and getting a urine sample. Your doctor will probably forbid you from having a penile implant surgery if you have an infection, diabetes that is not well-managed, or cardiovascular disease.
Penile Implant can be performed using spinal anesthesia or general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision in the lower abdomen, the base of the penis, or just below the penis head. Afterward, the surgeon stretches the tissue in the penis and places two inflatable cylinders inside the penis. Inflatable device (two-piece or three-piece), the pump, saline reservoir, and the value are placed inside. Finally, the surgeon closes the incisions.
You will receive instructions on operating the pump and care for the surgical area afterward. You might anticipate mild to severe discomfort for a few days following penile implant surgery, but the symptoms should subside within a week or two. The doctor will take several steps to lessen your pain, including emptying any built-up fluid, recommending painkillers, and applying compressive surgical bandages. Your doctor will also prescribe antibiotics to reduce the likelihood of infection.
For a few days or weeks, you would require painkillers. Your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to reduce the likelihood of infection.
Although it could just take a few days for you to be ready to go back to work, a full recovery could take several weeks. In four to six weeks, you should be able to resume sexual activity. The healing period can be longer for people with any existing medical condition.
If you are a man who has had prolonged erectile dysfunction and does not respond to other therapies or experienced negative side effects from these treatments. Men with diabetes, heart disease or who have had prostate cancer treatments that have affected their sexual function, you are a candidate for this procedure.
Yes you can. We recommend to bring someone with you for emotional support, but you can stay at one of our recovery homes where you will be very well taken care of with 24/7 nurse care for all your needs.
If you have tried medication and treatments, penis pumps and or self-injections without having any success, considering a penile prosthesis implant as a long-term solution for severe erectile dysfunction is an option.
The recommended time is 5-7 days after surgery for any travel arrangements. This is so we can check on your progress and make sure your recovery goes smoothly.
