IVF Procedure

IVF stands for In-Vitro Fertilization. It is a type of reproductive technique (ART) that is done to assist a woman in becoming pregnant. It is usually tried after other, less expensive reproductive treatments have failed.

In IVF, the woman’s egg and a man’s sperm are joined in a laboratory. The fertilization occurs in the lab, and the embryo is then injected into the woman.

Who Is The Best Candidate?

You may be a suitable candidate for IVF if you have the following:

  • Trouble becoming pregnant through sexual intercourse, especially when paired with fertility medicines
  • Endometriosis
  • Fallopian tubes that are blocked or absent, as well as other tubal issues
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • A male spouse who is suffering from male-factor infertility
  • Inflammation of the cervix
  • Abnormal ovulation cycles
  • Inability to develop healthy eggs

Preparation

You can prepare your body for treatment in the following ways before beginning your IVF journey:

  • Consume a healthy, well-balanced diet.
  • Start taking prenatal vitamins right away.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Stop smoking, consuming alcohol, and using illegal substances.
  • Avoid traveling to any countries or regions where you might be exposed to Zika or other serious infectious illnesses, which could cause treatment to be delayed.
  • Reduce or eliminate caffeine intake.

Surgery Details

During the IVF process, mature eggs are retrieved from the woman’s ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a laboratory. After that, the eggs and sperm are allowed to unite and turn into embryos. The embryos are then transferred into the uterus. If the fertilized egg attaches to the uterus lining and grows, the baby is born after nine months.

After Surgery

Following embryo transfer, you may experience the following minor symptoms:

  • Moderate bloating and cramps.
  • Breast discomfort as a result of elevated estrogen levels.
  • Spotting.
  • Constipation.

People will resume their routine activities immediately following their egg retrieval operation. However, you should not drive for at least 24 hours after receiving anesthetic. You’ll return to the clinic nine to 14 days after the embryos are transplanted for a pregnancy test using a blood sample.

Home Recovery

Following are some things that you need to take care of post-IVF treatment:

  • It is not advised to have sex following an IVF transfer as this may result in infection and contraction
  • Avoid being exposed to chemicals. Some substances can readily pass through the placenta and induce miscarriage.
  • Avoid contact with someone who has a cold, chicken pox, the flu, or rubella.
  • Avoid strenuous workouts like aerobics, running, jogging, or cycling.
  • Avoid climbing the stairs as much as possible.
  • Avoid using birth control tablets after IVF.
