The duodenal switch is a weight-loss procedure for persons with extreme obesity. It is a combination of a sleeve gastrectomy and an intestinal bypass. The duodenal switch is the most difficult but effective bariatric surgery.
The procedure combines restriction and malabsorption for weight loss to occur. It removes 70% of the stomach, just like sleeve gastrectomy reduces stomach size.
You will enter a detailed screening process to identify if you are a good candidate for this surgery. The screening process involves the following:
The procedure is great for you if you have:
Before the surgery, you need to follow the instructions given by your doctor. Following are some of the things that you need to take care of:
Duodenal switch surgery can be performed either openly or laparoscopically. Instead of accessing your abdominal cavity, the laparoscopic procedure uses thin equipment through small “keyhole” incisions. When feasible, surgeons and patients prefer minimally invasive surgery procedures; however, certain people may require open surgery to address their problems. Sometimes a laparoscopic procedure must be converted to an open procedure.
For the next year to two years, you will have regular follow-up appointments with your healthcare practitioner and periodic appointments for the rest of your life. Your most significant weight-loss period will be the first two years. During this period, your provider will closely monitor your growth and health. You’ll undergo frequent blood tests to monitor for nutritional deficits for the remainder of your life. You’ll also need to take vitamin supplements on a regular basis for the rest of your life. This is critical for preventing malnutrition.
Most patients who endure the long operation may anticipate recovering in three to four weeks, but 4-6 weeks is the ideal healing time (for open surgery types).
Those who had laparoscopic duodenal switch surgery will recover in 1 to 2 weeks. Even after this period of recovery, there is continuous healing owing to the requirement for significant lifestyle and dietary modifications.
You’ll also be required to follow rigorous nutritional restrictions during your rehabilitation in terms of what you consume and how you eat. It may take one to two weeks to complete each stage of your return to a regular diet, which includes:
