Who is a Candidate?

Anyone who has general physical health, good gums and enough jawbone density so that the implant can be placed and properly supported and anchored in your upper or lower jawbone.

Preparation

First you will need a consultation where an x-ray will most likely be taken to see the extent of your problem and if you need to have this procedure done.
The doctor will give you specific instructions on what to do 24 hrs before your procedure. They usually consist of not having any kind of alcoholic beverages and to avoid smoking, have healthy meals and take a pain relieving medication before the procedure usually ibuprofen.

Surgery Details

The procedure consists of placing anesthesia usually local,, then proceed to cut open your gum to expose your jaw bone, drilling will start to make the hole in the area where your implant will be placed. A metal or titanium screw or post is placed, a suture will be done to closed the exposed area and cover the implant. After this procedure temporary material such as crowns, teeth, dentures or bridges are placed to allow the wounds to heal. This process takes about 2 weeks.

After your gums are healed the doctor will proceed to place your chosen permanent teeth.

It will take about 4-6 months for the implant to permanently attach to you bone.

After Surgery

After your procedure it is very important to keep your area clean. So your doctor will most likely prescribe you pain medication, antibiotics and an antibacterial mouthwash to keep germs and bacteria controlled.
You will need to avoid chewing any kind of food on the treated area until your area is fully recovered.

Home Recovery

Swelling and a little pain is expected. So pain relievers and antibiotics will be prescribed. Also an ice pack will help with swelling and pain reduction. A soft diet will also be recommended to avoid discomfort.
